Danau Sentarum National Park

The Rarest Lake in The Heart of Borneo

Danau Sentarum National Park

Only in Danau Sentarum National Park, you can adventure in the woods, swamps, and Danaus as well! Danau Sentarum National Park is the representative of the freshwater swamps Danau ecosystem and tropical rain forest in Borneo and the Ramsar Convention designated it as International Wetlands.

Danau Sentarum and seasonal Danaus that are in this national park are located on the basin of Kapuas river, which is about 700 km from the mouth of Kapuas river. Surrounded by hills and plateaus, Danau Sentarum is the catchment area as well as water regulator for Kapuas Watershed. Thus, the areas located downstream of the Kapuas river are highly dependent on fluctuations in the amount of water collected in the Danau.

Water system of freshwater Danau and flooded forest make Danau Sentarum unlike other Danaus. The water is dark reddish color because it contains tannins derived from surrounding peat forests. In the rainy season, the water depth of the Danau reaches 6-8 meters and cause flood for entire region and the surrounding forest. However, during the dry season, some of Danau Sentarum’s water will decrease and become a vast expanse of land. When the Kapuas river’s water is gradually receding, the water of Danau Sentarum is what ultimately flows into Kapuas river, thus ensuring the sustainability Danau Sentarum National Park is essential to support life support system in Kapuas watershed.

The Danau is so huge that you feel that you cannot see its banks surrounding you that making you feel as if your are in the middle of the ocean. The sunrise view in the morning is really stunning as the sun is rising with its bright rays shinning just above the Danau water, a picture perfect scene indeed.

It is an unforgettable trip when we reached to Sentarum Danau in Kapuas Hulu Regency. We started our journey from the capital, Putussibau by road to Lanjak, a small village to meet the boat man who dare to take us there. After one hour on boat, we began to enter the interior part of Borneo exotic region that is dominated by its natural green jungle of Borneo. Our left side, looks a towering hill that cast magic associations. Please pay more attention on its water color. Black water made it fantastically beautiful and eerie in the same time.
